New Year Means Lots of New Goods!

Since the new year rolled over, I've been busy pulling all the stuff out of my brain that had been festering there while I was busy getting Christmas orders out the door. Boy, has it felt good! I still have a few new things up my sleeve, but for now I've gotten the above things into the shop. Hope you are feeling happy and productive too!

Brand New Leaves Just in Time for Fall.

The leaves are starting to change color, just around the edges. I'm not going to lie, Autumn is my favorite time of year! 

A couple of nights ago as I was falling asleep, I had a vision of a lovely leaf dancing in my head. It was a fleeting moment, and dissolved into my unconscious on my way to sleepy land. 

Often those design ideas are lost forever, but the following afternoon something jogged it into my memory. And wouldn't you know, I had the pattern drawn to scale in one shot! I love it when a plan comes together.

These felt cookie-cutter leaves are framed in a pop of color, and the veins are double stitched (in two different colors) to add interest. They are really unique and so much fun! 

Now available in the shop: pumpkin and golden moss.  

More Owls than Ever Before!

The afternoon sun is still very warm in our corner of the world, but in the morning when I stand next to an open window there is this deliciously cool air that reaches in and brushes any exposed skin; it gives me goose bumps. I really love Fall. The layers, all the warm beverages, and the comfort food. And then come the twinkle lights, the early darkness, and then the Christmas music. 

This past week I was excited to fit it some sewing time. The shop is now outfitted with more owls than ever before! Just in time for the cooler weather some of the owls are sporting little crocheted scarves. They look so cozy, don't they?! Available in white/forest, aqua/burgundy, ruby/ivory, and lavender/eggplant.

Owl barrettes have also been restocked. It's always so much fun to decide how I want to embroidered their wings! Right now they are available in lovely Autumnal colors: butterscotch, garnet/gray, and oatmeal.

In addition I decided to add wee owl barrettes to the mix. If the traditional owl barrettes are too large to suit your fancy, then these wee ones are just the thing. For the lover of owls and all things tiny, find them in oatmeal/cinnamon and butterscotch/marigold. I plan to add more color options soon!

Aqua Expecting Owl // Aqua Owl Barrette

There was a bit of owl mania over here last week. I was so busy (and excited) getting ready for the Constellation Owl line launch that I forgot to mention two other owls that found their way into the shop. After selling out of owl barrettes I managed to find time to create another one. I also FINALLY got around to offering the expecting owl in another color option more fitting for ladies with baby boys in their tummies. (Yes I know owls lay eggs, but here at Ordinary Mommy we like to have a little bit of fun.)

Lace and Felt Floral Hair Clip Tutorial.

This lace has been in my stash for a little while now. Shortly after I opened the shop back in October of 2008 I used it to create clips; I thought it would be fun to re-visit that design and share it with you here on the blog!

SUPPLIES: lace trim (mine is 1/2")
          green felt (enough for two leaves)
          yellow felt (for flower center)
          embroidery floss to match felt
          hair clip or barrette (I used a 2" french barrette)
          scissors
          sewing needle  

1. Cut a length of lace (mine was 7") and thread it with embroidery floss by weaving in and out about every quarter of an inch or so, gathering (pulling it taught) as you go along.

2. Continue to stitch and gather. How tightly the lace is gathered will determine how open or closed the flower will be. When you come to the end start working the floss back into the flower to make it nice and sturdy.

3. Cut two leaves from the green felt that are large enough to accommodate your barrette or clip. 

4. Attach the lace flower to one of the leaves by going through the center of the flower and then through the top of the leaf a few times. Make sure the flower is secure enough to stay in place.

5. Sew a small circle of yellow felt into the center of the flower.

6. Embroider the top of the leaf with the flower. (OPTIONAL)

7. Attach the clip to the top of the remaining leaf. (If using a snap clip you can see how to attach it here.)

8. Sew the two leaves together with the opening of the clip on the opposite end as the flower. 

9. Stick it in your hair!

Layered Petal Hair Clips.

In case anyone missed it, I added a new floral design to the shop a couple of weeks ago! Seven delicate petals are arranged on a bed of mossy leaves. For a little extra pizzazz this design also features a freshwater pearl center. These two-toned floral hair clips are a super sweet finishing touch to pair with sundresses. Available in red, purple, yellow, and peach.

I also created a large layered floral piece in yellow here. Currently it's the only one available, but I may add more colors soon!

Sneak Peek New Bow Design

I hope everyone had a productive and equally relaxing weekend! We were busy on Saturday moving my baby sister's day bed down to our house for the girls. Gone are the mismatched toddler beds. Yay! The day bed was actually my sleeping space before it was handed down to the smaller sisters in my family. It's going to be fun to see my daughters sleeping on the day bed and trundle that my sister, Bethany, and I shared during some of our growing up years.

A few hours in the afternoon on Sunday were used up trying to perfect a new large bow clip design. I decided that I needed to have one for myself, so I tackled the pattern, fixed some flaws, and then made a couple for the shop. They should be available on Wednesday, so be sure to check back!

In the meantime, I added twisted bow clips in six new colors to the shop last week; now available in Sea, Ginger, Lavender, Sunflower, Rhubarb, and Pistachio.

New Bow Clip Colors.

These bow clips are perfect for the grown-up lover of bows. They clip easily to the hair (they look extra sweet tucked in next to a bun), and they can slip onto knit hats to jazz the hat up a bit. There are generally only one of two of any color available. I've listed a second marigold and oatmeal clip; new colors are thyme and lavender.

New Bow Clips.

Three bow clips in a new design have found their way into the shop since last night! They are very sweet and simple at the perfect price. Each bow takes two long(ish) continuous strips of felt, so there will likely be only one or two of each color available as they show up in the shop. So if you see one you like, snap it up!

The layered oatmeal bow goes with everything.

DIY :: Felt Flower Hair Clip Tutorial and a GIVEAWAY

I've been asked to do a couple of different felt tutorials for some upcoming projects, so I thought it was about time that I shared an easy hair clip tutorial with all of my lovely blog friends! 

SUPPLIES.   approximately 7.5" x 2.5" of felt for flower
            about 1.25" x 1.25" of coordinating felt for center
            2.25" x 2" of green felt for leaf
            2" snap clip
                     embroidery floss to match felt color(s)

            embroidery needle

            sharp scissors
            flower clip templates (below)

(Click on the templates above to view and print them at original size. If it brings up a slideshow simply right click on the templates and select "view image".)

1. From the main felt color cut out two circles with the large circle template, and one circle with the medium circle template.

2. Cut a small circle for the center of the flower using the coordinating felt color.

3. Cut the leaf shape from the green felt.

4. Stack one of the large circles, a medium, and a small circle, and stitch around the perimeter of the small circle to hold them together.

5. Take the remaining large circle and put a slit in it just large enough to slip the center piece of the snap clip through. Stitch either end of the clip to the felt to hold it in place. 

6. Positioning the leaf in between the layers, put the front and back piece of the flower together. (I embroidered my leaf to make it a little bit more fancy.)

7. Sew the flower together by stitching around the outside perimeter.

 

8. Stick the flower in your hair!
